Immersion is showing the RSI 3D Laser at Siggraph, called by its full name “RSI 3D Laser for Microscribe G2 and MX Digitizers”. As the name already suggests, it is a 3D scanner that is attached to the foremost segment of an Immersion digitizer.
This allows the digitizer arm to be transformed into a 3D scanner in no time. The software receives the position of the scanner from the joints of the Microscribe. In this way, the software obtains precise information about where the scanner is currently positioned in the room, and scanning the surface can begin at the push of a button.
The scanner has an accuracy of about 0.1 millimetres. When used on a Microscribe with a longer arm, however, accuracy can deteriorate. Because the scanner delivers only a point cloud, an external application is required to convert the chaotic scan mesh into a uniform mesh defined by curves.
The price in a bundle with the smallest version of the Micoscribe is around 20,000 euros.
