Produced by Berlin-based Greenlight Media AG and BBC Worldwide, the impressive and, with a budget of more than 40 million euros, most elaborate homage to our home planet to date was created under the direction of Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield.
Producer Sophokles Tasioulis accepted the award from David de Rothschild and Anna Netrebko. ‘It is a wonderful reward for the entire team, which has worked on this project around the globe over the past years with enthusiasm and conviction. But we were able to win this distinction only through the uniqueness of the leading actor: our Earth, which must be preserved at any cost and which we may have been able to show in this form for the last time.’
The fact that ‘EARTH’ also opened in German cinemas last week with a record number of visitors demonstrates the documentary’s uniqueness. Greenlight Media CEO and Executive Producer Stefan Beiten: ‘In view of the current figures, I am particularly pleased that, following “DEEP BLUE”, we have once again struck a chord with “EARTH”. In cooperation with BBC Worldwide, Greenlight Media has now been able to demonstrate for the second time that there is broad public interest worldwide in high-quality documentaries with substantial content.’
