As every year, the 2017 FMX trailer, named “Elemental”, was created by third-year students at the Animation Institute. In keeping with this year’s chosen theme, “Beyond the Screen”, the trailer shows four expressive dancers who transform into the elements air, fire, earth, and water.

Team & technology

The director and creative mind behind the trailer is Adrian Meyer. The additional print and online visuals are being created by concept artist Julie Böhm, producer Lena-Carolin Lohfink, and technical lead David Bellenbaum.

“Elemental” combines the traditional medium of dance with the relatively young art form of visual effects. The team used the motion-capture and camera-tracking system developed during the Dreamspace project to capture the movements of the dancers and camera. The addition of further animations, Houdini FX simulations, high-speed footage, and CG renderings produced the final look.

Two more teasers and, of course, the final trailer will follow soon.

Why you should come to FMX

Of course, mainly because you can meet the DP editorial team there! ;) Joking aside: there will we once again be a packed program of talks, workshop, discussion panels, and parties, as every year. Anyone who wants to get a few impressions of FMX 2016—they are available in this video:
