Crytek has released the latest version of the CryEngine (5.6), including area-light support, a new ragdoll IK system and further physics simulations. The more than 1,000 changes in total were used in development for the new Hunt: Showdown game.
New Area Lights
The engine now supports Area Lights. The new implementation uses baked textures and is part of the “Point Light Component” in CryEngine. Among other things, point lights can be converted into area lights without any problems.

New physics features
The physics innovations include the new ragdoll IK, cloth with pressure simulation, as well as “Custom Mesh Ropes.” The latter can be created using custom geometry and simulated with the help of bones and skinning.

Micro-Facet Multi-layer Material
Especially for the visualization of metals, this new feature offers better control when creating materials. By combining several layers with different thicknesses and properties, it is possible to create wet surfaces, for example.
