Netflix buys Scanline | Film industry

Stefan Trojansky remains head – but: Is Scanline now working exclusively for the streaming giant?

In nuce: The streaming giant Netflix is currently in the process of acquiring the German VFX studio Scanline.

Amy Reinhard, Vice President and responsible for Studio Operations and Consumer Products at Netflix, emphasises Scanline’s expertise in VFX in a blog post and continues: “Netflix plans to invest in Scanline’s current projects, infrastructure and staff to support the pioneering work of Scanline’s Eyeline Studios in virtual production and continue to push the boundaries of what is visually possible.” Reinhard also highlighted Scanline’s work on projects such as “Game of Thrones”, “Godzilla v Kong” and Zack Snyder’s “Justice League”. Despite the acquisition, Netflix – Reinhard also writes – will continue to work with other VFX studios in the future. In the same way, Scanline will accept projects in the future that are not offered by Netflix. Scanline will continue to operate independently under the direction of VFX supervisor Stefan Trojanksy.

Current Netflix productions in which Scanline has been involved include the live-action adaptation of the cult series “Cowboy Bepop” and the action horror film “Blood Red Sky” by German director Peter Thorwarth. Upcoming Netflix projects in which Scanline is involved include “Don’t Look Up” by comedy genius Adam McKay (e.g. “The Big Short”, “Vice”, “Anchorman”), the action thriller “The Gray Man” by directing duo Anthony and Joe Russo and the fourth season of the hit series “Stranger Things”. Scanline has offices worldwide, namely in Vancouver, Montreal, Los Angeles, London, Munich, Stuttgart and Seoul.
