Who does not yet know the famous yellow umbrella that will lead Ted Mosby to the mother of his children in "How I Met Your Mother"? Umbrellas are therefore currently a symbol of romance and love. In Pixar’s new short film "The Blue Umbrella", which will be shown before "Monsters University", they even take the leading role as romantic protagonists. In rainy city life, a blue umbrella falls hopelessly in love with a female red umbrella.
The short film’s director, Saschka Unseld, is a graduate of Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, previously worked at Studio Soi and has been working at Pixar for several years. He has now released a short excerpt from the film, which already gives an impression of the work. Just like "Monsters University", the umbrella film will also be in 3D. According to the internet source collider.de, no live-action footage was used for the short film. The photorealism of the rain and the work’s deliberately placed blur would then be all the more impressive.
According to the Wall Street Journal, one of the greatest challenges for Unseld was the appearance of the umbrella faces. They were intended to look different from previous character faces, feeling more like the traditional animations of Disney’s early 2D days.
