Every year, a media student is selected to edit our animago trailers. This year it is Dominik Trottier from MD.H Berlin, whom we introduce here.

Dominik Trottier is studying for a bachelor’s degree in “Digital Film Design” with a specialisation in VFX and compositing at Mediadesign Hochschule in Berlin. He is currently completing his mandatory internship at Arri VFX, also in Berlin.

In addition to editing the AWARD trailer, which opens the festive presentation of the animago trophies in the Metropolis Halle, and the still trailer, Dominik also films the animago event on location to put together the animago event clip for everyone who stayed at home. The student’s preferred editing tool is Adobe Premiere Pro; he also wants to look soo at Avid’s Media Composer and Apple’s Final Cut as alternatives.

Composer Gordon Krei has been composing the animago trailer music for several years, which naturally has a major influence on Dominik’s editing work: “I listen to the music several times before I even start dragging the first clip into the timeline. Cutscenes from games, for example, fit quite well in the more playful parts of the music, slow-motion images in the epic moments, and with faster music, of course, you need action with lots of movement as well as many fast cuts.”

We are very excited to see Dominik’s trailer on the big screen at animago 2015. Be there too; early-bird tickets are still available here, the 2-day ticket for 78 euros, and the discounted student ticket costs only 48 euros.

MD.H Fifth-Semester Project

Dominik’s final project for the fifth semester was “Playzes.” For this, the student team worked with Munich Business School and promoted one of its smartphone applications with a clip. Here the students were able to integrate 3D modles into real footage for the first time during their training.

In March 2016, Dominik Trottier will have completed his studies after his bachelor’s thesis and will then apply to companies with his demo reel. His goal is to work on visual effects for feature films after graduation. He is not tied to a specific location, whether national or international.
