The free Adobe Photoshop plug-in for OpenEXR named “Exr-IO” is entering its second round. The OpenEXR Image Reader and Writer enables you to import, edit and export the EXR data as Photop layers with various options. The new version offers support for additional functions such as Cryptomatte decoding, mipmaps, reduced memory consumption and more.

Automatic Mode for Cryptomatte

Cryptomatte was already supported in Exr-IO to make the automatic ID mattes of your scene available in Photoshop as well. During import in version 2.0.0, you can check the box for “Cryptomatte Masks” to generate automatic mask layers for the individual Cryptomatte objects. You can view an example workflow here.

Mipmapping

For game designers, Exr-IO 2 now also offers individual reading and writing of mipmaps and ripmaps. These maps are optimized image sequences intended to increase rendering speed and reduce aliasing artifacts. Depending on the proximity to the camera, higher and lower resolutions of the same texture are used for this.

Further New Features

  • Reduced memory requirement when loading the data (up to 50%)
  • Recovery of damaged files
  • Reading DeepPixel data
  • You can find all further update notes here

Availability

You can download the plug-in here for free. It works for both Photoshop 32- and 64-bit versions for Windows.
