The first steps of Adobe’s incorporation are under way: Adobe is tinkering with the Substance tools’ licensing model.

Everything towards subscriptions: Adobe recently made several licensing changes to its Substance tools, naturally not in a blog post but rather more quietly through the Substance forum. Since the beginning of November 2019, perpetual licences can no longer be purchased through the official substance3D.com website. Existing perpetual licences can be extended with maintenance only until 31 October 2020, so anyone who already owns a perpetual licence can theoretically receive updates until 2021. Anyone who took out a subscription before November can also convert it into a perpetual licence until 31 October 2020.

Adobe Advances: No More Rent-To-Own

For everyone who starts their subscription this month or later, however, there is now no Rent-To-Own option. Rent-To-Own previously gave users the option, after 12 months of paid subscription fees, to convert the Substance tools, Designer and Painter, into a perpetual licence for a small surcharge. Perpetual Indie licences for Substance Painter and Substance Designer are available through Steam. The Substance forum staff, however, cannot and will not say how long this offer will remain available.

Current Prices and Creative Cloud

From now on, only the “Substance Suite” is available on substance3D.com, with Substance Painter, Alchemist, Designer and 30 downloads per month from Substance Source. The monthly costs have not changed. In return, the annual Indie licence is reduced to 219 US dollars from the original 239. The Substance tools are still not part of Adobe Creative Cloud.
