Adobe announced an agreement to acquire Frame.io, the camera-to-cloud collaboration platform, for US$1.275 billion.
Frame.io had established a cloud-first workflow for media production and video editing. One of the platform’s prominent contemporary case studies was the Michael Bay-produced thriller Songbird.
Creative Cloud and camera-to-cloud
Adobe said Frame.io’s camera-to-cloud approach would complement Creative Cloud collaboration services including Creative Cloud Libraries, Cloud Documents, Adobe XD design systems, Adobe Stock and Adobe Fonts. The combination was intended to make cooperation across tools such as Premiere Pro, Photoshop and Illustrator more direct.
Frame.io co-founders Emery Wells and John Traver were expected to join Adobe with the company. At the announcement date, the transaction was expected to close in Adobe’s fourth fiscal quarter of 2021; the businesses continued to operate independently until completion.
The historical announcements were published by Frame.io and Adobe. Digital Production’s issue 04:2021 included an interview with Frame.io innovation executive Michael Cioni.
